A portion of Lebanese people have been coerced to using dirty water on a daily basis. Fresh water is being contaminated by sewage, showing traces of mercury, salmonella and E-coli. This is mainly due to the absence of a sewage system and the leakage to rivers, lakes and groundwater.
The government has failed to provide more than 35% of the demand. Consequently, people resorted to rely on water trucks to fulfill their needs, inflating expenses. LIMS proposed allowing private companies to invest and maintain water sources. They would sell treated water to wholesalers providing competitive prices to consumers. The grid would be operated by private companies who are accountable for any loss in the system. Having an open market for water will greatly reduce prices on consumers and allow for greater accountability and better quality.
