Addressing Lebanon’s Economic Crisis: Private Initiatives to Service Municipalities – PRISM

Lebanon

Lebanon is facing one of the worst economic recessions, leading to a breakdown in basic services provided by the government like electricity and waste collection. These services have become increasingly scarce in Lebanon, with far-reaching consequences, affecting institutions nationwide.

Industries heavily rely on a stable power supply, while agriculture requires electricity for irrigation and cooling. Furthermore, the tourism and service sectors depend on electricity for heating and cooling. As a result, power outages have a profound and detrimental impact on the entire Lebanese economy. In parallel, garbage is starting to spread along the sides of the streets, adversely affecting tourism and local businesses, as well as their customers and employees.

It is essential to address these challenges by enabling the private sector to step in and provide these services at the municipal level. For example, the village of Tula successfully harnessed solar energy to provide electricity and extended service hours to 24/7 through private initiatives. Similarly, the private sector tackled the waste management crisis in Beit Mery village effectively through collaboration with the municipality. Private enterprises can play a crucial role in helping municipalities deliver those services. Those services would allow local businesses to operate more smoothly, boost production and sales, reduce costs, and create job opportunities.
